Each Zebra has its own stripe pattern. Zebras recognize each other by their stripe pattern and by their smell. Some species have narrow close set stripes, while others have broader stripes.
Stripe pattern of the 3 different Zebra species: The Grevy’s Zebra is larger than the plains Zebra and has many more, narrower, black stripes. The Mountain Zebra is smaller than the plains Zebra. It has an unpatterned belly and a dewlap on its upper throat.
None of the Zebras in each of these species look exactly alike. The Zebras color pattern is deflecting up to 70 percent of the heat that hits its body. a zebra's stripes actually work as a camouflage to deter its main predators because if they are in a herd the stripes can confuse the Zebras predators.
